Recreational Pilot

Requirements
-30 hours of flight training time
-Pass FAA Written Examination
-Hold Third Class FAA  Medical Exam
-Pass Oral and Flight Test
Training Areas
The Recreational License requirements are 10 hours less than for Private License.
The following training areas are eliminated:
-Operations at tower controlled airports
-Radio communications
-Maneuvering by instrument reference
-Cross-country flying
-Night Flying

Privileges and Limitations
Recreation Pilots are limited to:
-Carry only one passenger
-Flights between sunrise and sunset
-50 nm of airport where trained
-No more than 4 seats in aircraft
-Fixed gear and no more than 180 hp

Private Pilot
Requirements
-20 hours of flight instruction
-10 hours of solo flight time in airplanes
-Pass FAA Written Examination
-Hold Third Class FAA Medical Exam
-Pass Oral and Flight Test

Training Areas
Dual Flight time required includes:
-3 hours of dual cross country
-3 hours, 10 takeoffs/landings and a 100 mile cross country flight at night
-3 hours of flight test prep

Solo Flight time required includes:
-5 hours of cross country with landings more than 50 nautical miles from the departure point
-A 150 nautical mile flight with landings at 3 points, 1 which is least 100 nautical miles from
departure point
-3 takeoffs and landings at an airport with an operating control tower

Privileges and Limitations
Private Pilots are not subject to the limitations for Recreational Pilots. This allows them to fly at
night, carry two or more passengers and fly more powerful airplanes.
